Tango events with live music in a wonderful, historical, vacation setting.
Home to greatest number of antebellum homes in the South, Natchez is a walk
through the past through lanes of Spanish moss and oaks, gardens, bordered
by the Mississippi River. A brand new tiny tango community is beginning
here, as part of the region including Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
Natchez is a five hour drive from Atlanta, just over four hours from
Memphis, and three hours north of New Orleans, and one and a half hours from
Baton Rouge.
Live music provided by the Gerardo Perez Tango Trio and the Jazzers Swing
Band.
WHERE, WHAT, COST?
Sept. 17:
FRIDAY 5:30-6:45PM event at Natchez Historical Foundation, free,
$5 suggested donation.
Gerardo Perez will show slides and talk of the history of Argentine
tango, paralleling in time with the creation of American jazz.
Poignant lyrics and stories of tango, and demonstrations of types
of dances
from tango history.
Friday night milonga at 8:30PM In Bowie¹s Tavern. A historical saloon, that
looks towards the sandbar on the river where Jim Bowie had a legendary knife
fight, and slew his foe with his name sake knife. Our private milonga room
smells like cedar, and opens to the Mississippi River! $5 per person, live
tango music.
Sept. 18:
SATURDAY TANGO, SWING, AND SALSA afternoon beginner classes *:
The Prentiss Club on Pearl St.
3-4 PM swing, tango, or salsa TBA, 4-5PM Tango, and 5-6PM salsa
LOUIE BIANCO, from Little Rock, will be teaching the salsa class. SARAH
VIZER and SRINI from New Orleans will teach tango..
*Classes are for those attending the evening special event.
SATURDAY SPECIAL EVENT! SWANGO!!
TWO live orchestras for dancing: THE JAZZERS SWING AND JAZZBAND of the St.
Jo¹s Orchestra, and the GERARDO PEREZ TANGO TRIO from New Orleans.
Starts at the Prentiss Club, a beautiful vintage ballroom in downtown
Natchez, at 8:00PM . There will be exhibition dancers; be there!!
Goes till 11PM. $20 per person or $35 per couple
SATURDAY night late milonga 10:30PM-1:00AM ($5 pp) at the beautiful
upstairs parlor of Biscuits n¹ Blues. LOTS of atmosphere, and wood floors,
too. A full on southern buffet for $18 pp and cash bar, live tango orchestra
and recorded music. It is a two block walk from the Prentiss Club.
Sept. 19:
SUNDAY morning 11-11:30AM tango for peace short dance: no charge, at
the gazebo on the River
Sunday Tea Milonga: 1-5PM. $20 pp, includes tea, one glass champagne,
elegant edibles, served by bodacious butlers. Live music 1-3PM,
SWING Exhibition dance and class with KELLY VUYOVICH from Hattiesburg
3-4PM, beginner¹s TANGO class 4-5, teacher CHRISTINA JOHNSON. 511 Main St.,
second floor of the Brown, Barnett, Dixon bldg; at the Morris Gallery.
