Brian and Deb have been tango partners since 1998. (Since Thursday March
19, 1998, at about 9:20pm, actually, when they danced together for the first
time at the Pearl Street Studio in Boulder) While Brian had already taught
his first tango class as a solo teacher the previous year, he and Deb soon
formed a teaching and performing partnership. Since 1999, when they formally
organized "Dance of the Heart" in Boulder, they have:
- taken over one hundred hours of advanced study with Gustavo Naveira and
Giselle Anne
- become certified as teachers in Mauricio Castro's innovative "Tango
Discovery" methodology
- organized hundreds of hours of workshops with visiting maestros like
Luciana Valle, Tomas Howlin, Brigitta Winkler, and Mauricio Castro
- studied extensively with other maestros such as Julio & Corina, Gavito &
Marcela, Fernanda & Guillermo, Daniel Trenner, Cacho Dante, and many many
others
- spent over five months in Buenos Aires (four months in the last three
years alone)
- toured twice to Europe, with return teaching and performing engagements
this year throughout Scandinavia
- taught thousands of students in hundreds of group classes in Colorado, at
Universities, high schools, and dance studios throughout Denver and Boulder
- delivered hundreds of private tango lessons per year (almost 400 in 2004,
while being on tour for almost four months!)
- hosted the popular Saturday "Bantaba Milongas" in Boulder, Colorado, now
in their fourth year
- originated the Wednesday "Burnt Toast Tango" dinner-practica in Boulder,
now in its third year
- provided Tango DJ services at hundreds of practicas and milongas in
Colorado over the last five years
- performed as tango musicians and singers with world-renowned tango
musicians such as Daniel Diaz, Pablo Aslan, and Mauricio Najt
- co-produced, co-directed (with aerialist Cathy Gauch) and starred in the
original theatrical production "AIResTANGO" (returning to Colorado this
summer!)
- performed as tango guest artist dancers with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Ballet
Nouveau Colorado, at the Colorado Music Festival with legendary bandoneonist
Daniel Binelli, at the huge Tangomarkkinat festival in Finland, and at
milongas and practicas in Aspen, Telluride, Grand Junction, Fort Collins,
Chicago, Copenhagen, Venice, Russia, Sweden and Buenos Aires.
- pioneered exceptionally effective workshop techniques with Luciana Valle
and her team of Argentine assistants in Buenos Aires this year (coming again
in October!)
- been married for more than three years now, and...they're STILL dancing
and teaching together!
What keeps these two going at it like this? Well, tango brought them
together, and they love it. They delight in sharing the sheer joy and
penetrating mystery of the social tango connection with their students, in
all its subtlety and grandeur. "To see a student finally sink with comfort
into the close embrace at a practica or milonga, and glide with their
partner around the floor, at one with each other, the music, and all the
other dancers in the room, offers tremendous satisfaction. To watch a
leader develop the quiet, calm confidence that persuades a follower to
relax, by winning her confidence in his leading...to watch a follower
express her passion and heartfelt emotion through every move she makes on
the floor, in the arms of her leader - these experiences, taken together,
help to build for all of us the kind of social space that can make tango a
lasting part of our lives together, offering to all of us connection,
warmth, passion, solace, compassion, exhilaration and joy. Come share with
us what we've learned in our travels, and let us offer you the lessons we've
been given, to enrich your own tango lives and enliven your tango
communities."
