Gavito came several times to Nora's Tango Week. One year he danced an amazing spontaneous exhibition with El Indio in the milonga that was held by BA Tango as the culmination of Tango Week in City Hall. It was amazing, the two were doing a folk dance with zapateos, jumps, leaps, and changing rhythms, each one responding in turn to the other and trying to outdo the other. It was electrifying to watch them in their high spirits and inimitable styles vying to outdo the other.
Another wonderful exhibition and a highlight of my life was watching Gavito do an exhibition at Nora's with Marcela. Everyone expected a salon tango in their typical lean style. But they danced a milonga in that style. It was incredible that they were able to do it. People were cheering and applauding until the roof almost came down. The most beautiful milonga I have ever seen anyone do. Gavito was an original. Not an angel, not a god, just himself, and only himself. Stella
