Tango Intensive Workshop: Close-Embrace Tango 2 days of Almost-As-Good-As-Privates Tango Intensive!
Dear Tango Friends, We are having a tango intensive in Portland, Oregon on the weekend of September 24-25. If you live anywhere in the west, we want to invite you to join us. We will help you build a solid foundation for your tango dancing. Building a tango dancer is like building a house. First you need to have a design, the you need to build it, and finally you need to give it life by filling it with love. What exactly do we teach you? We start with steps, for they are the patterns of tango. This is the intellectual process of knowing what you are going to do, before you do it. But we don't just teach you steps. Instead, we break down each step into their components, and teach you how these patterns actually work when you dance them. Then we work with you until these patterns become something you can do easily and comfortably. Some people call this "muscle memory". You do all your patterns over and over until they become part of your muscle memory. You learn the timing, the weight distribution, flexed or straight legs, how to move the torso and many other things. LIke a well-built home, you need a strong foundation. That is what you will get by doing steps repeatedly with proper technique. These are the details that hold your dancing together. By doing this, you will train your mind to become much more conscious of every part of your body and every movement you make. You will find that it willl seem like time is slowing down. But in truth, your capacity to be aware of your dancing is increasing. Once this happens your tango "house" is secure, and it is time for "you" to move in. Now there will be room in your tango for your feelings, for awareness of your partner, for inspiration, and for spontaneity. Now you learn to pause, to listen to small details in the music, and to express them. Now you can "play act', be passionate, flirtatious, playful and teasing, and be outrageous if you want. It's your house, and you can do what you want in it! If you take our "Tango From The Heart" Close-Embrace Lead-Follow Intensive, we will help you design, build, and give life to your tango house. Just understanding a step pattern and walking through it is not enough. We help you to make it your own. We break down the patterns and show you how they work, so that you can do them. And, when you have fully mastered your patterns, we teach you how to dance them with feeling. If you feel called to learn tango from us, there is an opportunity in Portland, Oregon this month. You will have to travel to Portland, but will be well worth your time. Why? There are a number of reasons: First, since the classes are limited to only twelve students, and we spend two full days with you, there is plenty of time to dig deep into your most pressing issues, and your personal goals and aspirations for tango dancing. Second, you will progress more quickly in tango once you have the strong foundation that we will give you. Third, you will no longer be wasting your time learning step patterns that you can never do on the dance floor. Fourth, you will learn how steps work. That will make it easier for you to learn steps from anyone anywhere, even from videos. If you want to be a more graceful and confident tango dancer, we invite you to spend two days with us in almost private instruction. People come from many areas to learn with us. Jay Rabe's home studio is located in a beautiful and serene place. This enables you to focus on the subtle art of leading and following. The cost is an affordable $95 for one full day of almost-private instruction or $190 for two full days. Our Tango Intensive workshop does not focus on steps. Instead, we work on the core concepts of Tango - connection, walking, balance, flexibility, strength, body awareness, lead/follow principles, intention, musicality, timing, embellishments, improvisation, and navigation. As such, students can benefit from attending just one or both days. Testimonials From Past Students: Kathryn Johns and the Charleston Tango Society: Teo and Marsha have an amazing understanding of the deeper aspects of Argentine Tango, coupled with the talent to work with dancers at several levels at once, providing personal attention! This has been the most amazing workshop experience we've had! Cliff and Glynda Newton: Teo and Marsha's concept and method of teaching involves the spiritual connection between dancers as well as the same spiritual connection between the teachers and their student dancers. Andrew Weitzen: loved your lessons enjoyable yet challenging encouraging me demanding, gently [that I learn] correct foot placement, weight distribution, body posture, and tension and pressure in the lead. Veronica Emhart: really enjoyed the heart to heart connection. I think both of you do an extraordinary job in transferring the beauty, sensitivity, sensuality, and fun that Tango can provide to all of us. C.G.
