Jaimes & Rachel come to Pittsburgh, PA for a full week
of close and open tango!

JAIMES FRIEDGEN and RACHEL SMITH share in the
philosophy that tango has no boundaries. Through
connection and improvisation, the man and woman create
a conversation together, both listening and both
speaking. With playfulness and creativity they look
always to find a way of movement and communication
that is natural, intuitive, and dynamic.

Jaimes began dancing tango in 1996, and Rachel in
early 2000. They have danced, performed, and taught
together since 2002. They both came to tango with a
varied background in movement, including several types
of dance, gymnastics, and martial arts. They have
studied with masters of many styles of tango. Their
own style is innovative, graceful, inspired, and they
are often asked to teach at major festivals in the U.S
& Canada. Jaimes has also recently taught in China.

Saturday, Nov. 5 (WSCC)
-----------------------
Noon-1:30pm 4. MAINTAINING INTIMACY WITH ADVANCED
VOCABULARY (Adv. Couples Only). Sometimes dancers
become so focused on executing a step that they forget
the connection with their partner and miss the beauty
of the step. This class will focus on how to stay
connected while playing with complex vocabulary. You
will work with the same partner for the entire
workshop.

1:30-2:00pm REGISTRATION & WARM-UP. Basement Room

2:00-3:30pm 5. MUSICALITY (Experienced Beginners+).
Adding texture to the dance with pauses and rhythm.

4:00-5:30pm 6. GIROS WITH EMBELLISHMENTS (Int.+).
Enrosques, lapis, and sacadas. Leading/following
rotations and their possibilities. Students should
already know a basic giro/molinete. We recommend
taking the Thursday Mens/Womens technique classes if
also taking this class.

Sunday, Nov. 6 (Church)
-----------------------
1:30-2:00pm REGISTRATION & WARM-UP.

2:00-3:30pm 7. EPIPHANY & CREATIVE IMPROVISATION
(Int./ Adv) Tango dancers understand the theory that
they can do any step after any other step but what
stops them from doing just that? Epiphanies come from
when dancers figure out HOW to add that one gancho
right there and the boleo that seems impossible after
that one step.

4:00-5:30pm 8. SHARED-AXIS TURNS (Int./Adv.) Break a
few rules! Sharing the same axis can produce cool
movements and create a different type of torsion and
dynamics. In the same family as colgadas.
