Tom Stermitz is a well-know and highly respected tango teacher and organizer from Denver, Colorado.

He is the Artistic Director and Producer of the Denver Tango Festivals over the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. These are two of the top tango festivals in the US, drawing 300 - 400 of the best dancers in the country.

Teaching in Boulder & Denver since 1996, Tom is a specialist in the rhythmic, close-embrace social style of tango typical of many clubs in Buenos Aires. This specialty has earned him invitations to workshops and Tango Festivals around the US and abroad, including Berlin, Moscow, Ann Arbor, St Louis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Portland, San Francisco, Champaign/Urbana, Hawaii.

Tom believes, as we do, that at its best Argentine Tango is a trance, danced so closely that you feel your partner's heart beat and share the rhythm of their breathing. Tom believes that you can succeed more easily if you approach tango as an improvised, rhythmic walk rather than a lot of memorized patterns.

Tom's classes are taught with a progressive curriculum. He starts with fundamentals, emphasizing improvisation, rhythm, music, heart & soul, and especially the connection between the leader and follower.

He is co-teaching with his wife, Melinda Quiat. Melinda was formerly a professional ballet dancer who has become proficient in the authentic social style of tango. Women will be especially appreciative of her teaching, because she gives lots of attention to the the role of the follower in the dance of tango, stressing the importance of technique and the art of energized and responsive following.
