Makela Brizuela, Urban Tango Director and Choreographer, brings her remarkable talent and vision back to the stage by recapturing the dynamic and poignant world of the Argentine Tango community in Los Angeles.

Urban Tango brings the audience into the heart of the woman’s Tango experience: the yearning for a relationship with passion and intensity, the competition that is resisted but inevitable, and the pain of jealousy and loss without the support of other women. Sharing in the hope that springs from renewed connections to each other, even the humorous and all too human fumbles along the way, draws the audience into the Tango as a metaphor for life.

The renewed cast is drawn from the Argentine Tango community itself. The dancers are professionals in many other fields, but all are lovers of Tango and have committed their time and energy to this company in order to give the audience a glimpse into the possibilities and pitfalls of  Social Tango.

Ms. Brizuela, who has proven herself to be a phenomenal and energetic creative force in the Los Angeles Tango Community, was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Makela trained for ten years in modern dance and ballet, receiving her degree from the National School of Ballet of Argentina.  She has studied Argentine Tango with some of the most respected artists in Buenos Aires, returning regularly to study and maintain her connection to the true Argentine Tango. Over the past eleven years she has taught, danced, performed, and choreographed tango in Argentina, Mexico, and the United States.  She has performed in prestigious venues such as The Ford Amphitheater and the Red Cat. Ms. Brizuela was also the creator, producer, and director of the show "Tango Cabaret" at the Museum of Latin American Art.  In addition to performances, Makela provides group and private tango instruction, and hosts some of Los Angeles’ most popular weekly practice sessions.

Premiering September 9th and 10th of 2006, Urban Tango: The Agony and Ecstasy of Amateur Tango - In search of the elusive embrace sold out both performances and was overwhelmingly well received.
