What to Do in the Meantime(Part 1)" Before we leave to teach in Europe, we want to set the stage for the arrival next month of GUSTAVO NAVEIRA and GISELLE ANNE as part of Colorado Tango Encuentro 2007. It's hard to communicate how lucky we are in Colorado to have Gustavo and Giselle here as our own tango "artists-in-residence" for TWO WEEKS, twice as long as at any other stop on their USA tour. For our part, we have been studying intensively with Gustavo and Giselle since 1999. We've been asking them to visit us in Colorado since 2003. Every time we're in Buenos Aires with them, we attend every class of theirs we can, and often sneak in meetings and private lessons on the side. We've been spending late nights planning this visit, and we're very excited to finally see this event taking shape. Why do we think they are so great? Well, simply put, we watch them dance, and our hearts begin to ache and our eyes begin to cry. Beyond the intellectual rigor of their tango framework, beyond their deep awareness of structure and technique honed over twenty years of systematic exploration, they are simply world-class artists and historically pivotal teachers and investigators, fascinated with what tango has been, is now, and where it may be going, and incredibly gifted with the capability of sharing that adventure with their students, with warmth, humility and infectious good humor. We know many of you are planning to study with these tango maestros. We want to help you get the absolute greatest benefit possible from their teaching and their radiantly beautiful dancing. In this class, and the other pre-G&G classes we'll offer in Boulder after we return from Europe, we'll be looking at offering you ways of thinking about the dance you already do, and choosing to modify the WAY you do your chosen vocabulary. There won't be new vocabulary in these pre-G&G classes, but if you work on the exercises we'll show you between now and their arrival, you'll be able to benefit the most from THEIR classes. CLASS PREREQUISITE: Lead &/or follow full turns to both the left & right, including full 180 deg. follower hip-pivots such as used in "ochos", & a lead/follow to "the cross" free of prescribed patterns in time with the music. DRIVING DIRECTIONS: >From Boulder At the corner of Walnut & 30th Streets, turn east on Walnut. The next street you cross is 32nd. Turn left or NORTH into the 1st driveway AFTER you pass 32nd. At Walnut Street, turn right. In one block, cross 32nd St. & turn left into the 1st driveway. Boulder Window Tint is on your right & a brewing company is on your left. Continue straight ahead or NORTH between those 2 buildings. The bright blue door to your right (1st one directly BEHIND Boulder Window Tint) is the PreEminence studio entrance. About PreEminence Hall Features 1,400 square ft sprung hardwood floor, air conditioning, ample free parking, more details, maps & photos available on-line at: http://preeminencehall.boulderkodokan.com/home.html NOTE FROM DJ BRIAN: The music will be structured in tanda-&-cortina format with four songs per tanda (sometimes fewer with longer songs or high-energy Milongas). Tandas will consist of either tango, milonga, vals or "alt-tango" music. Music will be about 70-80% classic tango music from about 1930 through about 1968, including more recently recorded music from an easily recognizable tango tradition (e.g., Fernandez Fierro, Los Solistas, El Arranque, Color Tango, Sexteto Canyengue). Alt-tango music tandas will be composed from music that has demonstrated "change-of-pace" appeal to tango dancers at multiple practicas and milongas in multiple cities (including Buenos Aires) where about 70-80% of the music played is classic tango. "Alt-tango" music choices include but are not limited to: Libedinsky, Goran Bregovic, Cirque de Soleil, later Astor Piazzolla, Haris Alexiou, Loreena McKennitt, etc. As always, the proposed tentative playlist for the evening will be posted. While it's intended to be a convenience for dancers to plan their evenings, it's more of a guideline than a playlist - after you examine it, please share with me your requests, & I'll see what I can do.
