In our continuing recognition of Black History Month,
Ernest Williams, president of Tango Life Inc. and promoter of Candombe in the
U.S., will be joined by a few other Chicago tanguero/as to provide a
demonstration of the African Roots of Argentine Tango during the intermission
of the Sunday night Hyde Park Jazz Society's event this coming week (Feb. 17)
at the Checkerboard Lounge (5201 S Harper at the northeast end of Harper
Court). Admission to the evening of jazz (& tango) is $10 ($5 for students over
21 with valid ID); doors open at 7:00 p. This Sunday's jazz artist is Diane
"Lil Jazz" Ellis, a saxophonist who's "playing is steeped in the south side
tradition of big bluesy sound." The Argentine Tango demonstration likely will
occur around 9:00 or 9:30 p.
Parking is available in the 24 hour lot east of the Checkerboard Lounge
(www.checkerjazz. org) and, reportedly, meters are not monitored on Sunday
night. Beverages are available for purchase at the Checkerboard Lounge (a two
drink minimum is encouraged). Food purchased at the excellent Harper Court
restaurants such as Dixie Kitchen (773-363-4943) or Calypso Cafe (773-955-0229)
may be brought into the Checkerboard Lounge and consumed during the music.
