from inside the culture of tango. It delves into the immigrant
experience in Argentina, where improvisation, creativity, and
solidarity were survival skills in everyday life. It explores the
resurgence of tango in the age of international festival-hopping,
tango gypsies, and the Internet and finally sets the record straight
about the early days of the tango before it became the toast of Paris.
It gets into the lyrics of the songs and brings the reader up close to
one of those legends in person—Alberto Podestá, who sang with the
greatest tango orchestras of all time, and with whom I had coffee
several afternoons while poring over printouts of the very lyrics he
made unforgettable.
Author: I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, and have lived half of
my adult life in the USA. I received a graduate degree in psychology
from the University of Buenos Aires, and a PhD from the University of
Missouri. I now dance in Buenos Aires and in the US.
