As a complete Tango newbie (6mos) and after watching hours of Youtube each day,
  I would agree that yes 'patterns' afflict even the most seasoned Milongueros.
  The difference is  that the social dancers are dancing for 'feeling' and not 
to be seen.
  They may only have a repratoire of short walks, ochos cortados, ocassional 
cross, and
  giro but they do it with feeling and they do the giro when the music takes 
off ...not when
  it simply falls next in the progression.
  If one looks long enough at youtube you will come to the conclusion that the 
best
  dancers could make simple walking, an ocho cortado, a giro, one sacada and a
  defeated cross...into the most beautiful dance possible..by listening/knowing 
the music
  and dancing to it together...
