Since there have been some comments about the Buffalo tango scene, I thought I'd offer my perspective as an outside observer. I just got back from teaching there and met quite a few of the tango community. I found Buffalo to be a young and promising community and I met a couple of good organizers whose hearts are in the right place. I was impressed that folks came from Rochester, Toronto, and other parts of New York to support the Buffalo tango scene. Barbra did an excellent job organizing everything.
I didn't meet any Strads, but there are a few young dancers with dance backgrounds (ballet and some modern). Influence from teachers and dancers in nearby Rochester will undoubtedly make (or have made) a positive impact on the Buffalo tango scene. There was a lot of exchange of teaching ideas and experiences all the way around. A lot of dancers were open but not showy, but all of the younger men were comfortable dancing in apilado close-embrace with me. Sean danced close with all but one woman. There is a young man teaching at the University of Buffalo who is working at teaching salon close-embrace. As with any community, there are areas of weaknesses. I'm sure those issues will work itself out as Floyd and Barbra bring in experienced instructors. Happy tangos and community-building to all.
