I agree that trying to learning the basics from DVDs would be a huge mistake.
After all, the "basics' is walking - LF fwd, RF fwd, LF fwd, RF fwd, etc. The problem is how to do that properly while making a good connection with your partner so that there is 'lead and follow'. How can a video teach that? Sure, you can also learn Ochos and Giros - but how to lead them? At best, you'll just waste your time. At worst, you'll pick up bad habits that might be very difficult to correct when you eventually get to classes.
