Nightclub Salsa
Born in this century in Puerto Rico and New York, salsa is just what the
name implies, a mix of African rhythms and European partner dancing
resulting in a constantly evolving dance with distinctive regional spicing.
Come and learn the basics, or develop your existing skills. Our goal is to
get you dancing and having fun right away. Emphasis will be on rhythm and
musicality, and partnering with lead and follow techniques. Everyone will
learn to both lead and follow.
The first class will start with exercises on rhythm, walking, balance, and
connection, and will focus on basic turns for leads and follows. This
quarter, the second class will work on wraps from open and crossed embrace
for both leaders and followers.
The classes will build skills throughout the series; so, while everyone is
welcome to drop in for the occasional class it could be confusing to only
come to the last class.
The classes will be held in the Assembly Room at the Bechtel International
Center.

CLASS SCHEDULE
Salsa: Mondays 1/10, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7
Tango: Mondays 2/14, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21
* There is no class on 1/17 due to the holiday
7:00-8:15 fundamentals
-musicality and rhythm
-basic lead and follow skills
-basic turns
8:15-9:30 intermediate
-variations on rhythms
-polishing the lead and follow skills
-wraps for leads and follows
9:30-10:00 -free dancing
You need:
-no experience. The fundamentals class will assume no previous dance
experience.
-for the intermediate class you must be comfortable with basic salsa rhythm
and leading and following basic turns
-no partner. We will switch partners frequently.
-no $$ (courtesy of Bechtel)
-comfortable clothing
-comfortable shoes. Leather or suede soles are best but not
required.
