Survival Guide for Tango Dancers

Adapted from Yves Denault –Tango-L, Portland Oregon

1. Make friends with those people who share your
values and your reasons for dancing tango.
2. Visit other milongas in your city, state or
province to get another perspective.
3. Let people dance the style they want. Your task is
to dance the best you can.
4. Dance with the people you like or love instead of
the “best dancer”, or the “hunk” or “babe”.
5. If you ask someone to dance and they decline, don’t
take it personally. We all have preferences and often
just like to watch. If you’re asked and aren’t in the
mood, be gracious. A “no thanks, but thank-you anyway”
goes a long way.
6. Learn to follow the line of dance. Otherwise you’ll
either hurt other dancers or get hurt yourself.
7. Find teachers who make life easy for you, who can
read what you need at this time in your tango career,
who can actually explain what they themselves do.
8. There is absolutely no need to have to sleep with a
teacher in order to learn tango.
9. There is absolutely no reason to tolerate being
berated, humiliated or abused by a teacher or a
tanguero/tanguera. Should anyone attempt sexual
assault, call the police, for your own dignity and the
protection of the community?
10. Remember tango is big business. On average each
dancer shells out $3,000.00 a year. Don’t confuse
conviviality with friendship or you’ll end up
resentful.
11. Make tango parties among your friends. Roll up the
carpet and dance at home. Your parents did.
12. Share your music among friends.
13. If things get too much, take a break from tango
for a month or two. You’ll come back refreshed and see
it with new eyes.
14. Never lose sight of the beauty of the music, and
what it feels like to
dance.
