Well may be you can use another distro (linux has a lot distro, right?
:-))
I think, I had had same problem like you. Linux was run slowly in
pentium 2 with 128MB RAM.
The solutions are:
I have to compiled packages & kernel according to machine I had. Or,
Install the computer with optimized distro.

You may visit www.linuxiso.org. There, can select linux distro by
architecture and also provided mirror for download it.

well the older the machine, the less speed advantage you will get from
Gentoo.  
also it could take days to compile, which is not an option...
