Normally the normal path goes something like this:
1) User starts helping other users on the mailing list answering
questions
2) Helper starts posting bugs (and patches for bugs) in JIRA
3) If 2 happens enough someone who does commits nominates patcher as
committer
4) If the rest of the committers agree (through a vote) then patcher
gets added as a committer with some kind of probationary period (to
make sure that they aren't going to screw up the code)
This isn't always the way it happens but that is the typical path in
my experience.

I know bandwidth is an issue for many, but I think I might be able to
provide some nice contributions to the framework in the form of
normal bug
fixes as well as hopefully at some future point(whenever people are

discuss) incorporating some of the ajax logic I've been working on
in tacos.
The tacos inner api for doing these things is a little messy at
best, but
could be made pretty again by a few easy tweaks here and there to
tapestry..
