I took what existed in VLib and modified it.  I think you should be able to do 
a redirect to https for this (I've not tried however).

I created a base page, which all of my 'secure' pages used. Then, if the 
connection is NOT secure (there is a method call for this, provided by the 
Servlet API from memory) you can throw a RedirectException.

The only thing that I didn't do was redirect from http to https - so at 
present my system shows the login page completely disabled until you change 
to using https.  That might not be exactly what you had in mind.

If you're interested, I can post some code here.
