The IEngine has been initialised. But just before the 
initialize method is called , the page is detached
from the engine. (Please see p305 in TIA.)
That is why you are getting a null pointer exception.

You can do the initialization in Page
pageBeginRender method or 
the  AbstractComponent method 
 protected void finishLoad()
