Well...two reasons come to mind...(based on my rather limited EL knowledge)
OGNL seems to be a bit more powerfull in the sense that it has
projections, you can declare variables etc. - don't know if you can do
that kind of thing using EL, but I don't believe you can.
Also, you can use the latest and greates OGNL regardless of the version
of JSP. For me it doesn't mean much, but for someone extending a complex
legacy system, it's obviously beneficial not to have to upgrade the
framework the system runs just so you can use the latest version of EL.
