I've never really investigated initial-value because it's not "the way" to initialise your persistent properties. From the wiki: http://wiki.apache.org/jakarta-tapestry/Gotchas see "initial-value attribute of property-specification" Common practice is to set up properties in pageBeginRender by implementing PageRenderListener on your java page class.
