It is hard to suggest something because it is hard to know your full
requirements.
For me when using something quick and cheap for example apps, I have
found eatj (www.eatj.com) to be ok. The only problem is the uploading
of a large war file and the limited (uncaring) support. They do work
with tapestry though and offer great value for a small applications.
You can even create a free account and test things for free.
There are also some other shared hosts that will offer similar deals -
the only problem with many of them is cost.
If you are good at setting things up and managing a system from scratch
- then unmanaged VPS hosting can be great. This is what I currently
use. You choose a level of resource to suit what you are running. This
involves finding a host who suits your requirements with regard to
memory, your disk and bandwidth usage. It allows you to do things like
run straight tomcat (so I can get client IP addresses) and run things
like postgreql. It is all your choice. These can be quite good and
cost effective if that is one of your requirements. Some come with
various control panels to help ease administration - again at extra cost.
If you are not so confident setting things up and managing the host
fully (things such as complicated db setup, patching etc etc) then there
are also a number of VPS providers offering managed hosting. You get
your own environment but they do some of the setup and day to day things
but they cost a bit more.
A good resource is http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ - check out the VPS
Forum to see a number of possible candidates and peoples reviews of
dealing with them - and also scroll to the bottom and view the Web
Hosting Offers --> VPS Hosting Offers for a range of VPS hosts
offering what they have.
A dedicated server is nice resource wise - only problem is that it is
going to cost you a bucket. This suits some people but it doesn't suit
others.
As for backup, if using the right type of DB and setup, you could use
some sort of periodic replication back to another DB. This is an
advantage of being able to manage your own system. Many of the VPS's
also allow backup to another drive, one I saw offered bi-daily backups
to dedicated backup servers. My host gives me 4 Gigs of usable data
and another 4 Gigs to create periodic images of my setup.
Good Luck,
Lindsay

I would like to create an online service using tapestry, but how do I
find a website hosting company which will allow me to use tapestry?
I am UK based, so If anyone has any recommendations that will get me
started that would be much appreciated.
Thanks
