I'd love to see some of the better components out of the Tassel or
Tacos library find their way into the base Tapestry distribution. I think
it's complicated enough for new users to have to add the contrib library to
their projects without having to ask them to go off and google their way to
the components they want and then have to download them, add them to the
.application file, and then figure out how to use them.
Put another way, I think the usefulness of a component goes up
dramatically if it's distributed as part of Tapestry. A popular component on
Tassel gets, what, 150 or so downloads? Tapestry's in the thousands at
least, and I'd love to see it ship with a more full featured set of
components.
As other's have mentioned, sure you can build your own menu with the
"atomic" components inside tapestry, and for advanced users or unusual cases
that's always going to be an option. For a new Tapestry user though, who
just wants to bang together a simple application, he'd much rather be able
to just use a built in menu component and not worry about it again.
Maybe we can talk Howard or one of the contributors into expanding
the OOB component set for 4.1?
