I play a few instruments tuned in fifths.
The regular mandolin is a Laura Ratcliffe A-5 style. It has a lovely sound. I also play a 1923 Gibson Mandola, which is as warm and wonderful sounding as anything I know. I just this summer took an old Dobro mandolin which had a trashed neck and built a 5-string neck on it, so it covers both mandolin and mandola range. I LOVE the sound of this thing, and so do many folks who have tried it. In fact, I have 5 people wanting me to build them one, so I've been working on that project a lot lately. If you want one, too, let me know. I also play a ukulele banjo strung with mando strings and tuned in fifths to D. And an old Vega Tu-Ba-Phone tenor banjo, which I have string Irish-tenor style (Octave mandolin tuning). I play the mandolin, 5-string, and Vega in a contradance band. I play the mandolin and 5-string in a swing/folk/bluegrassy band. And sometimes I get to play rock & roll and blues on the mandolin, too. Haven't tried the 5-string in this context yet, but I aim to. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Taterbugmando" group.
