I notice that sometimes when I pick up one of my instruments it sounds
very much in tune
and "musical". This is never the product of having just tuned up with
a tuner but I'm guessing that the instrument slipped into some type of
tempered tuning. A happy accident.

For example on guitar bluegrassers will often tune their B string a
bit flat especially when playing out of G position.

Do any of you use a tempered tuning on your mandolin?
Have you noticed a "formula" that seems to work in particular keys?

Just curious even though I can keep mine in tune anyway :)

Why do the old blues players sound so good yet sometimes out of tune
to our modern ears?
Here's an interesting article related to this.
