Coming from a classical pianist background...I thought I had this all figured out. The more I struggled to "get it all done" practicing wise...the less music I got to make. Mike kept asking if I was having fun....and I wasn't. So after all this time...I work on my new tunes...then I play my old tunes and practice the clips with Mike and just try and keep up. It's getting better. He can't hear me if it's a bust (thank goodness) and I'm enjoying the genre and the work. But it doesn't feel so much like work. I know I will never play like Mike. The most I can do is hope I will play like me and we both will be satisfied. I think the mandolin lends itself to the fun part of music. It is soul-grabbing. It's what speaks to us. But if "wood shedding" (scales, technique, etc.) becomes the most important thing...that is not what music is all about. One college professor told me...technique is just a way to create the sound you want to hear. So when I want to sound like something...it's time to go back to my Mike file and watch and listen. I don't think about technique-but I know what I want to sound like. Just five cents from my spare change.
