Well I did some highly objective experimentation this evening, and took the
apparatus off and played against the wall. To my ears right now it seems
that the device does boost volume and sustain, in the same way that a tone
ring will do for a banjo - i.e. lots of ring. What is clear is that playing
fast and tremolo sound loads better without the thing as long as I do it
right - much more definition: the tone gard also is forgiving of
imprecisions and fills in the gaps if you hit a duff note. So I think the
thing helped me get from really useless tone, to half decent tone, but now I
think I need to take it off and make sure I get really good tone...

Actually I can see the apparatus being much more useful if you play tricky
jazzy stufff up and down the neck and need to have the mando really stable
against your enormous gut. It seems to me now that if you want to go for
Monroe stuff, it's better to skip it.
