Robin, as I understand things, the alternate tunings are very popular
with fiddler's, and its heaps of fun to try out on the mandolin and
the different tunings make new chord sounds, very very cool, however
one needs a very sound mandolin with cross bracing to avoid the
tension on the strings pushing the top in, when tuning strings up in
pitch.  (Anyone here who knows more please jump in).  Another way to
go is to keep a second mando, for the alternate tunings, one ...that
is cheap enough to not feel that bad about if anything untoward
happens.  You might already know this, but if not, it is worth
understanding so the good one stays good.
