Back to squirrel hunting and less of strange things with tubers. I spent today figuring out the Squirrel hunters from various versions, and what a wonderful tune to play. Spending some time with the Long/Compton version and the Hartford & CÂș one made me listen to the backup properly - playing along with the ipod stuck in my ears: it's just so good. I'm not a bluegrass or old time exclusive listener, but my default pleasure for the last year has been Hamilton Ironworks, the red Hog and more recently the Long bow.
Has anyone worked on backup in their taterclasses? I haven't but sure am going to get some advice about that - until now it's all been right hand, but frankly if you play with a band, what do you spend 90% of your time doing? Super solos are great, but good backup is more - again I think about Dylan's current band... A question to tater- did the Hartford theory about changing every 8 bars come from a mental analysis, or just trying to quantify what you all were doing? All for now, just been playing some Ska music for my daughter, and we were talking about how it's made - that it's all on the 3 like some hiphop and some fiddle music- she gets her ukulele soon and I think she's going to be a much better musician than me..
