Terry--

I took a look at a 1953 or 1954 Gibson F-5 in 2004 or so. If I
remember correctly, the asking price was around $5000. The mandolin
was beautiful, and very lightly-built, with a ver sweet tone. But
absolutely no punch AT ALL. Not a suitable bluegrass mandolin for me
(or anybody, for that matter)--although it might have been good for
other styles. Needless to say, I did not buy, but maybe that helps
you a little in your consideration.
