For 23 straight years my family went to Grant's Bluegrass Festival in Hugo, OK. The Johnson Mountain Boys were there several times and I was completely awestruck by Eddie Stubbs fiddling. The crazy thing to me then, and still now, was his perfect intonation regardless of how fast he played. When they were on stage, I'd walk all the way down to the front and lean against the stage in front of Eddie and just stare for the duration of the show. One night I'm in my usual spot and Dudley Connell looks at me and says "You better be careful there, son. Those boots take two cows and mule each." I was just grinning ear to ear and listening to a fiddling hero. It really doesn't get much better than that.
