Mark,
I was sort of under the impression at first that Andy's vocalizing was
possibly a chant of some sort, but then it dawned on me(duh) that he's
also a very accomplished clarinet player and maybe, when he's caught
up in the music, that he feels the need to push air out of his lungs
the same way that he does when he's playing the clarinet. I had a talk
with another great mandolinist, Radim Zenkl about his penny whistle
playing. He said that he found it a much more natural instrument for
him to play, that he feels the connection to it stronger than he does
with the mandolin because he uses his breath to play it rather than
holding it in his hands and using him hands to make sound. Of course,
what Andy's doing may have nothing at all to do with my own little ill-
researched theory, but it gives me something to study on.
