If you are looking for a mandola as opposed to an octave mandolin, you
might want to investigate a vintage model. I suggest this because I
notice that the prices for some of the WWI era H range of Gibson
mandolae have not really moved up in price for quite a long time (say
over seven or eight years). The 1917/18 H2 that I bought back in the
early 90s looks to be about the same price now (when I translate into
UK sterling) as when I bought it back then.

The usual suspects (Mandolin Brothers, Gruhn and MWH) would be a good
place to start looking if you want that Old Time sound.

Best,

Taube
