You need to have a file called log4j.properties available in a subfolder 'conf' on your classpath. Also place the file directly on the classpath so that log4j itself will find it.
The reason for this is that in 1.7 we had something called Log4jConfiguration that reconfigured log4j right after start up so that it could place the log file in the $HOME/.taverna-1.7.0/log/ directory - it had to do it at runtime to be able to determine what folder is $HOME/.taverna-1.7.x (This is version and OS specficic). You will see that the log4j.properties bundled with Taverna 1.7 contains some system properties that are not normally set - these are calculated by this Log4jConfiguration (and thus was only picked up from the conf/ folder, and not automatically by log4j) - however if you have your own 'vanilla' log4j properties this should not be a problem.
