Hi,
I came across http://www.hazelcast.com/ whilst browsing some ruby blogs. Its like it may be a potential alternative backend to the reference-manager, or as the buffering layer. It claims to be very fast. Its also been using on large clusters on Amazon EC2: http://highscalability.com/blog/2010/5/3/100-node-hazelcast-cluster-on-amazon-ec2.html <http://highscalability.com/blog/2010/5/3/100-node-hazelcast-cluster-on-amazon-ec2.html>so may have some future cloud potential.

I've not looked too closely at it, but the API looks fairly simple (e.g http://www.hazelcast.com/documentation.jsp#MultiMap )and it released under the Apache License.

Stuart.
