Computer Scientist / Software Engineer Postdoc (Reference A60/14)
EARTHSEQUENCING

ERC Consolidator Grant Positions

As part of the European Research Council funded Consolidator Grant
“EARTHSEQUENCING”, the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, MARUM, is
searching initially for motivated researchers, including 1 Computer Scientist
(D) in the area of signal pattern matching, time series analysis and scientific
workflow modelling, starting from May 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
We are searching for enthusiastic and dynamic researchers. The Project
“EARTHSEQUENCING” will be carried out in the research group “Palaeoceanography”
of Prof. Heiko Pälike at the University of Bremen. One major challenge to be
addressed by EARTHSEQUENCING is to overcome fundamental obstacles to generate a
first high-resolution and continuous fully integrated record of geological
events, ages and durations (a ‘sequence of Earth history’) for the past 66
million years, anchored to the present, to extract properties of Earth’s and
solar system orbital motion, and then to apply this time scale to solve first
order questions about Earth’s climate system and Earth System sensitivity.

The computer scientists (D) is in charge of completing a scientific workflow
modelling system and developing scientific time series analysis/pattern
matching algorithms, and preparing scientific publications as part of the
project team.

We are searching highly motivated and skilled candidates with the following
requirements:

A completed academic degree in Physics, Astronomy or Computer Science
A very strong quantitative background, including time series analysis methods
Applicants should have excellent English language skills and enjoy working in
an international and interdisciplinary team.
A track record and future expectation of publishing in international peer
reviewed journals
Experience in structured software development, numerical methods, ideally with
experience in Python, Java, Obj-C/C++, with a relevant PhD
Please address enquiries to Heiko Pälike ([email protected]).

The positions are available under the condition of job release and are
initially limited to a term of 30+18 months and funded by the European Research
Council (ERC). Salary and benefits are commensurate with the federal German
employee scale TV-L 13. The Computer Scientist position will be on level TV-L
13 (100%). Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a
statement describing research interests, the applicant’s research and technical
background as they relate to the position, and contact information for three
referees.

More information on research and technology at the MARUM is available at
www.marum.de

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female
employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of
equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to disabled
persons. The University of Bremen expressly invites persons with migration
background to apply.

For informal enquiries please contact Prof. Heiko Pälike, Tel. +49 421 218
65980 or [email protected]. Initial deadline for the application is 23th April,
2014. Positions will remain open until filled. Applications should be directed
electronically with the reference number A60/14 to Heiko Pälike
(mailto:[email protected]) or by mail to
