I never came across this convention until I started using the
internet. I've always been taught (this is the British system) to use
one space between sentences. All the books that I've ever read (that I
can remember), use one space between sentences. In fact, I've double
checked all that are in arms reach, i.e., scientific journals from both
North America and other European countries, novels, texts. All seem to
use one space.
I personally use a text cleaning application, "Text Cleanup",
that I use in conjunction with my news reader. This makes the space
between sentences /optional/. I personally prefer only one space, so if
anything is to be done, I hope that it is made optional because it's not
necessarily something to be 'fixed'. There are some, like myself, who
appreciate this feature as is.
Interestingly, the auto-format feature doesn't interfere with
the spacing between sentences. :-/
