Cyclic Redundancy Check is a form of error correction in which a 16
(<= 4Kb data; detecting all single and double-bit errors) or 32 bit
polynomial (> 4Kb data) is applied to the send data, and the receiver
also calculates the polynomial. If they don't match, then the data is
 requested to be resent.

It is also used in files where a CRC is applied to the file, and the
software you use to open/view it calculates the CRC and if they
don't match, then you get the error.

If you want to see the nitty-gritty on CRCs, check these out.
