It took me a while to work it out, but IMAP filters have worked for a long while. I found that the trick was to make sure that incoming mail filters were only applied to the Inbox. Add to that Stefan's revelation that ticker virtual folder message list didn't remember viewmode selection but /does/ remember manual column arrangements and settings.
