AFAIR the rule for writing user-friendly-but-not-user-lazy programs was that
the user should be allowed to do almost anything, AS LONG as the program
maintains its usability. All actions which would result in the program not
fulfilling its primary function should be heavily guarded with warnings or
restrictions. Not all users know perfectly well what they're doing, and - while
it's important to let the "experts" break whatever they want, at their leisure
:) - it's even more important to warn the beginners that they MIGHT be doing
something wrong. Like, trying to send a recipientless message.
