You misunderstand how that should work. The above works correctly. To
do what you are thinking you should say:

this %-
 should be %-
 in one line

which results in:

this  should be  in one line

No problem there.

I'm easy on that. I quite like the thought that you can make hybrid
macros that way, but I can also see that it can lead to unintended
effects.
