Either you use the plug-in, or you use the tray. If you use the tray,
you don't need the plug-in. If you install PGP 7.x, you will have to
use the tray, because there is no plug-in. Am I missing something?

Good, then please don't S/Mime sign your messages, because it blows up
the message size by quite a bit. ;-)
