Yes, and I know why Fortran needs six spaces at the beginning of every
line of code (had to do with the IBM hardware at the time), but that
doesn't mean it's acceptable for any computer language nowadays any
more. Fortran also had it's heydays, but they're gone. Same for the ">"
at the beginning of a "From" line.

In today's world, software is outdated very quickly. I'm not trying to
execute you, but I can tell you what is "the latest" today is most
likely completely outdated in 2 years. Others say, in half a year.
Never mind whether you know the technical details why the earlier
version did something (or required you to do something) undesirable.
Let's not start tio defend the shortcomings of early computing days,
shall we? ;-)
