Yes. Enable the message list in folder-view. You can find this option
under View / Message list.
I never use the arrows for browsing a folder. I always use the message
list and the keyboard shortcuts for navigating: <Ctrl +> for expanding
the current thread and <Ctrl -> for closing it and the shortcut for
next unread message <Ctrl ]>.
