Certainly there must be a method of leaving incoming mail scanning on
and toggling off outgoing mail scanning, src=

The problems I have seen in the past with NAV (never tried NPF)
installed on some workstations is that a message containing a
significant sized file attachment caused SMTP server time outs because
the server handshake was initiated, client connected to NAV's SMTP
engine, NAV connected to the host SMTP server and then NAV took
it's time (and system resources) scanning the attachment and the
server decided no one was home, dropped the connection and end of
story.

Every restart of the MUA caused the same problem as the MUA believed
the message and attachment were not delivered and around and around we
go, in an endless loop, until the "offending message" is deleted from
the outbox. Fortunately NAV had settings that allowed incoming mail to
be scanned and outgoing mail scanning disabled.

The topic has been beat to death here and on TBUDL and TBOT about
exactly what gets accomplished utilizing mail scanning properties of
an AV product if a resident scan engine is running so I won't go
there.
