Cleanup should be done by writing to a new file and only replacing the
old one after the new file is completed and stable.

the usual algorithm is

file -> create -> tmp
tmp -> replace -> file

Does TheBat do an in-place re-write? I sure hope not. File space is
not the only reason that a file re-creation can abort.
