Did you sign the message inline or did you use PGP/MIME.

PGP/MIME messages are base64 encoded when delivered. It's up to the
e-mail client at the other end to decode it so the recipient can view
the message.

.. and not surprisingly, as you stated in your later message, the
message was read without problems.

You could try sending the message, but with PGP/MIME switched off.
