I had that same option in my previous mail client, Virtual Access, and I
also miss it.

Not exactly what you want (or what I would want) but I use an
"Involved" filter that colour codes (assigns to colour group) all
messages in a thread (actually sub-thread or branch) starting from my
first contribution. This works for me because I use my own domain and no
one else does. This is the filter:
