While focused on the folder pane, switch folder by using the up or down keys. If you tab to the message list pane before it has been updated (it's a matter of fractions of a second, but it happens often enough), the message list pane does not update.
You can continue browsing, reading and replying to messages, but not messages in the folder you wanted to browse.
