It's a usability goal: editable fields in Windows are always in white background. When I started using The Bat! the first time, I was wondering "why in gray?" My only compliant now is that the button for the drop-down menus are still in the old windows style (as the message list headers) and not in XP-like style :) Opposed most of you, I think aesthetic improvements are important as much as other features.
